Effective date: January 01, 2019
Authorities have not made public the new scheme and its comprehensive plan for the new migration system but the old first come, first serve policy is done dusted with and a new merit-based assessment would be put in place.
Those who are coming to study would be eligible only if they study for at least 24 months long program instead of the old system where 12-month duration courses also allowed you to apply for a visa extension. Only students who would stay back for a longer period would be covered under the new plan.
People with high skills and meritorious academic backgrounds would get preference and would be expected to prove their potential for economic contribution and their commitment to Australia to get a go ahead. The new policy would be of interest particularly for people who fall under subclass 190 visa meant for skilled individuals.
Importantly, people who were in the process of completing their migration process to Australia in June, earlier this year, would get some extra credits should they choose to apply under the new system. However, people who were living in Australia and left Australia post-completion of their courses after June 2018 would find it tough to apply under the new system and must wait until all terms are made clear with regards to the new system.
