To encourage the increasing number of Indian students migrating to Canada, the authority has now shorten the visa processing time. Canada has introduced ‘Student Direct Stream’ (SDS) program for India and three other countries which cut down the processing time to 45 days from 60 days. The four countries are India, Vietnam, China, and Philippines covered under this new program. From now, any students from these countries with sufficient financial resources and English skills will be able to opt under this program.
This new program requires less visa documentation and faster processing time. While, Student Partners Program (SPP) program was only available for students opting for 40 unusual participating Canadian colleges, this new policy applies to only college education in designated colleges. The same was published by Canada’s immigration division, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently.
While countries like UK and USA made harder visa norms for Indian student, Canada opposed the trend with this SDS programs. In 2017, Canada rolled out 83,410 study permits for Indian students which was almost 58% higher than 2016. Eventually, in 2017, India was the top country in chart obtaining largest number of Canadian student visas. Moreover, by April 2018, 29,000 Indian students obtained student visa for Canada. From last year, India left China close behind in the race of obtaining maximum student visas.
As per IRCC, this new SDS program is designed to complement the express entry program so that entailed students geteasier chance to apply for permanent residence and Canadian citizenship after their studies completion if they wish to continue their stay in Canada. On completing post-secondary education from Canada, students can get 15 extra points in Express Entry system. And, completing a course over 3 years or more grants 30 extra points in Express Entry application system.
